Runkelstein Castle - The illustrated castle
On
the 19th April, 2000. Runkelstein Castle was finally opened to the
public after a long “deep sleep” and given back to the South Tyroleans as
well as to visitors from all over the world. Runkelstein
Castle, which rises up from a porphyry rock slab, is the pride and joy of the
citizens of Bolzano. Despite
its rather difficult access, its presence and romantic environment enchants
visitors and invites them to explore inside.
In fact, the real attractions are inside the Castle, in the West Wing and
the Summer House where the frescoes are considered the most comprehensive and
varied secular paintings in the world.
Runkelstein
Castle is a castle of fairy-tale images which captured the imagination of the
Romantics. It became the most
painted and then the most photographed castle of the nineteenth century,
therefore, it is
now frequently called “the illustrated castle”. The
Castle is now looking to a bright future. Although the technological era has
brought a more frenetic lifestyle, the Castle can bring us back into a
different past and help us to understand it. For this reason, take your time to
walk slowly and absorb the atmosphere
– a quick trip is out of question. While walking up the winding peaceful
path to the entrance of the Castle, the visitor can start to ‘feel’ and
reflect upon the past. It is the chance of a lifetime to experience and remember
an enchanting past era in this fairy-tale castle. You too, can experience the
magic when you visit Runkelstein Castle.
